June 1 Castaic Lake Trail Maintenance and Ride

This Sunday, 8:00am - Noon

The fire department has graded some areas for fire clearance. In the process, some of the trails were damaged. We will make some minor repairs on those areas as well as doing brush removal on some of the overgrown trails. You must RSVP to trailcrew@corbamtb.com by Friday 5/30 to be placed on the list so you will not have to pay the $10 entry fee to the park.

Fat Tire Fest 2008 Update

Save the date! The 2008 Fat Tire Fest will be held on October 12, 2008.

  • Strauss Ranch- We will join the SMMTC on an exciting project to build a new connector trail from Strauss Ranch into Malibu Creek State Park. For details visit the Calendar.
  • Rancho Palos Verdes, Sponsored by REI - We will be working on the trails around Del Cerro Park. For details, please visit http://mtbpv.org/volunteers.htm

June 19 Evening Trail Maintenance & Ride - Topanga State Park Rogers Road/Backbone Trail

Three options: 1) Valley Start - We will meet at the Caballero trailhead at 4:00 pm and ride approximately 5 miles to where the trail maintenance will begin on the Backbone Trail just past the Oak tree. We will work on the trail until around 7:30 then ride out. 2) Another option is to continue down the trail and get a ride back to Caballero with volunteer, Bernie. He will be riding in from the West Side. 3) West Side and other trails - climb Rogers Road or pick your route and meet the crew at the work site below the Oak Tree. If you cannot be there at 4:00pm that is okay...just ride in when you can! More info on the Calendar.

June 26 - Verdugo Hills Glendale - Las Flores Trail Maintenance and Ride

This is a short Trail that parallels the Las Flores fire road in Glendale. It is located at the top of Sunshine Drive. The trail is around 1/3 of a mile long. We will be cutting back the brush on the trail. We hope to knock it out in a couple hours and then go for a ride! We will start at 4:00 pm but if you can not be there at 4:00 just walk or ride in when you can. The trail is just a 1/4 mile past the gate on the ridge on the right side of the road just before the pavement turns to dirt. More info on the Calendar.

Upcoming Recreational Rides

June 8 - Annual Los Angeles River Ride

Join the LA County Bicycle Coalition and 2000+ other riders for a day of cycling fun along the Los Angeles River! It's five great rides in one: 100, 70, 50, 10 mile rides, or Kids' Ride & Fun Fair. Enjoy rest stops with music, food and fun, plus cool prizes, an Eco Expo and a new international food fair at the finish. Sponsored in part by Honorary Ride Chairman, actor Ed Begley Jr. More info at www.la-bike.org

June 14 - Recreational Ride Sycamore Canyon/Pt. Mugu State Park

Novice Ride. A great ride for first timers to SBMBC. One of the easiest and most beautiful rides near Los Angeles! We will ride up Sycamore Canyon and take the Two Foxes Trail. This will be an eight-mile round trip ride on fairly level ground with one stream crossing, some single track and fire road. The leader will go over the basics of how to ride a mountain bike as we enjoy following the river trail into Sycamore Canyon. If everyone agrees, we can add or subtract from the standard ride, and for example, go up Guadalasca to Overlook and back down to the start. For more information on C-rides, visit http://sbmbc.com/

June 15 - Recreational Malibu Hills Ride Backbone Trail.

Intermeidate/Advancedlevel ride. Mostly single track of the old and maybe some new areas west of Encinal. We start the ride at the Kanan Dume Road; and depending on the group - first riding the new trail on west side, and then the old area which crosses Latigo Canyon Road to the top of Corral Canyon Road, Castro Peak, and turn back. There are plenty of options to make the ride shorter if one so desire. The total ride is about 13 miles or 19 miles and 3700 ft. of elevation gain with the new part, and should take us approximately 4 hours. More info at www.sbmbc.com

June 28th Recreational Ride Mount Pinos/McGill Trail

Strong Intermediate Ride, high altitude. We will ride the McGill Trail up Mt. Pinos. Iwinhimu is the Chumash Native American name for Mt. Pinos and the summit is called Liyikshup, meaning the Center of the World, at 8,831 ft. elevation. This is an out and back ride on an epic trail. The environment is gorgeous and breath taking. There is 3,600 ft. of elevation gain over a stretch of ten miles and we get it all back going down. More info at www.sbmbc.com

Free Mountain Biking Skills Clinic

Saturday June 7 is the next skills clinic.

The CORBA free skills clinic is held on the first Saturday of every month at Malibu Creek State Park.

Mountain biking is a lot like tennis or skiing. Just a few minor  adjustments in technique can make a huge difference in your control  and proficiency. If you want to get better faster, you need to know the fundamentals of mountain biking technique. Whether you're just  getting into mountain biking or have been riding for years, you'll learn some valuable tips from our Introduction to Mountain Biking  skills class that is offered each month. Check out our Skills Clinic web page for all the information. After the clinic, see photos of your new skills on the CORBA web site that you can share with your family and friends!

June 7 - IMBA Southern California Summit

Southern California has great riding, healthy mountain bike clubs, a booming bicycle industry and increasingly favorable land use policies. However, region-wide organization of mountain bike clubs and advocates could use a boost. So on June 7, Shimano and IMBA California will host a meeting to bolster cooperative efforts in SoCal.

Attendees will network with IMBA state representatives, industry leaders and club advocates. Together we can support one another's efforts to build new singletrack trails and a provide a greater diversity of mountain bike opportunities.
