Cutting out a drainage nick that will allow water to drain off the trail. The crew leader has outlined the nick with red chalk so the new volunteers will know where to build it.

Now it's the buddy's turn to work on it

Just over half of the 20 volunteers worked on building drainage nicks. The cut back the overgrowing brush and did some minor treadwork.

A husband-and-wife team who just moved to the area in the past two months are already helping fix up our trails!

Time for a break at The Saddle, AKA Newton Motorway.
IMG_6520.jpg
The Saddle was as far as we worked from the trailhead on Latigo Canyon Rd.

From The Saddle, we worked on the upper part of the trail, heading towards Latigo Canyon Rd.

On this section, we knocked down about 20' of hard mud that had footprints and tracks dried in it. We sloped the trail down towards the outside about 5-degrees so the water would run off, rather than form a muddy area to capture footprints.

This switchback was armored with large rocks to keep people from cutting the corner.

The container holds the juice that powers the hedge trimmer. Using power tools allows us to get at least twice as much done in a day.

After we had finished building the drainage nicks, we cleared some of the slough off the inside of the trail. "Slough" is debris that has fallen on the inside of the trail from above. You can see that mountain bikers have already taken advantage of the extra width by riding down the middle of the trail, rather than on the outside edge.

Clearing slough is dusty work when it hasn't rained much recently!

Back at the trailhead, CORBA volunteers show off the swag they won in the prize give-away!

CORBA provides lunch for volunteers after the work is finished. This time, we went to a food court with an Urbane Cafe next to a Habit Burger Grill.

About 2/3 had a burger from the Habit. The rest had a sandwich or salad from the Urbane Cafe.
