Fat Tire Fest 2008 Update

This year's Fat Tire Fest and Fundraiser, held this past Sunday at Castaic Lake, was another huge success! It was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the 70's and a light breeze. There was plenty of entertainment and fun challenges to go around for all. In addition to the crowd pleasing Wheelie Contest, Hill Climb Contest and Log Pull, this year included a very flexible and nimble bunch of participants who entertained us in the Bike Limbo Contest. New CORBA board member Danusia Taber corralled kids ten years and under for a new FTF event ,the Kids Bike Rodeo. Children learned bike safety and riding skills at different stations. All kids received goodie bags with treats from Bear Naked, Clif Bar and CORBA Bells. Rodeo race winners received the book "Mike and the Bike". Riders of all ages had fun playing the entire day in the Skills Area on the teeters, ramps and skinnies built by board member and trail crew leader Hans Keifer. One young girl outdid some of the adults by zooming up and down the big teeter without batting an eye!

Bike Warrior's Ray Leibert generously hosted the Wheelie Contest again this year. The grand prize of a Scott mountain bike was won by Jeff Nist who also won it in 2007! Hey you guys get out there and start practicing ! Jeff needs more competition! Assisted by the  amazing Essence Barton, 2008 National Champion Jr. Expert XC racer, Mark Langton, CORBA's Skills Instructor, conducted a Skills Clinic with about 30 participants riding the stairs, practicing body position and valuable bike handling skills and tips. Cynergy Cycles, represented by Randall Araki, administered the Hill Climb Contest on the rigorous steeps of the West Ridge trail. Challenging tight switchbacks required strength and great balance of each contestant. Fourteen participants tested their strength and speed in the Log Pull Contest timed by volunteers Alan Stoddard and Jim Herbein. Winners won a singlespeed bike frame from Cycle Maven, bike  floor pumps and sunglasses. The Experts Ride through Grasshopper Canyon was lead by Brad Jensen and Essence Barton while Jim Herbein and Madeline Mathias guided a group on the Beginners Ride through easier terrain in the bottom of the Canyon, around the Short Track and picnic area.

Many thanks goes to our special guest racer, Essence Barton, who volunteered her time and expertise to come assist Mark with the Skills Clinic and leading the Experts Ride. Thank you Essence! Congratulations for a fantastic racing season! We were happy to welcome as special guest exhibitors this year SoCal Interscholastic Racing League which is just getting off the ground in Southern California promoting formation of high school mountain bike race teams and coaching. They are holding a fundraising dinner on November 22 if you are interested in supporting this effort. Not to be missed were the 2009 demos to ride by exhibitors Giant, Specialized, Niner, Trek, Bike Warrior brought Scott bikes, Bionicon, Cynergy, and Cannondale. Not only that but there were many other exhibitors who brought out great gear and accessories like Agoura Cycles, All Pro Bicycles, Bicycle John's, Ergon USA, Evomo, Fluid, Helen's Cycles, Pasadena Cyclery, Cycle Maven, Valencia Sport Groups and Nema International. Prizes were given by all these companies and  donors included Santa Cruz Bicycles, Cane Creek, Cole Wheels, Spoke N Wheel, Fox Racing Shox, New Belgium Brewery, Pricepoint, Clif Bar, Bear Naked, Whole Foods, Jenson USA, WTB, and Trader Joes. Plenty of great prizes were on hand that day! To see photos of all the 2008 FTF prize winners and the event please check the CORBA web site and click on Fat Tire Fest.

What about the food did you say? Carmen's Tacos are the BEST in LA! FTF attendees chowed down on delicious veg and non-veg tacos like nobodies business followed by cake in celebration of CORBA's 21st birthday. Happy Birthday CORBA!! Many thanks and gratitude goes to to all our wonderful FTF volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a great success and fun time! Thank you FTF volunteers - you are the best! Thank you for supporting mountain bike trail advocacy and trail access in Los Angeles and the surrounding area.

Photos and videos are already available, and more are coming online every day. Check them out to see all the activities, take a stroll down memory lane, and see if you can spot yourself, friends and family!

We will park at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory parking lot, ride pavement eastbound for a few miles, then up the Lower Sam Merrill trail where we will we will discover the ruins of what was once a very chic resort and listen to Echo Mtn mock us. We will then ride the remains of the old Mt. Lowe Railroad Trail, up to Inspiration Point where if it's a clear day, some of the best views of the greater LA area will be found. Now the fun begins as we go down the Middle Sam Merrill, then down Sunset Trail, both white knuckle adventures. The fun continues as we ride up up Millard Canyon fireroad over to El Prieto single track which we take down and through the Arroyo, and back to the JPL parking lot. Details at www.sbmbc.com

Beginner-level ride.  A great ride for first timers to SBMBC-CORBA. One of the easiest and most beautiful rides near Los Angeles! We will ride up Sycamore Canyon and take the Two Foxes Trail. This will be an eight-mile round trip ride on fairly level ground with one stream crossing, some single track and fire road. The leader will go over the basics of how to ride a mountain bike as we enjoy following the river trail into Sycamore Canyon. If everyone agrees, we can add or subtract from the standard ride, and for example, go up Guadalasca to Overlook and back down to the start. Details at www.sbmbc.com.

Free Mountain Biking Skills Clinic

Saturday November 1 is the next skills clinic.

The CORBA free skills clinic is held on the first Saturday of every month at Malibu Creek State Park.

Mountain biking is a lot like tennis or skiing. Just a few minor  adjustments in technique can make a huge difference in your control  and proficiency. If you want to get better faster, you need to know the fundamentals of mountain biking technique. Whether you're just  getting into mountain biking or have been riding for years, you'll learn some valuable tips from our Introduction to Mountain Biking  skills class that is offered each month. Check out our Skills Clinic web page for all the information. After the clinic, see photos of your new skills on the CORBA web site that you can share with your family and friends!

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day Recap

A couple of dozen kids turned out for this event at Malibu Creek State Park on October 4 with a parent or another adult in tow, despite a bleak forecast of rain. The day was cool but the rain stayed away and everyone had a great time! It started with a relaxed ride through a beautiful canyon on Mott Mtwy, then over to climb the "Planet of the Apes" rocks near the administrative building. Afterwards, CORBA provided a barbecue lunch for all participants.

Take a look at the photo gallery to see the kids and parents riding their bikes.

Governor vetoes AB 2923

Like Federal Wilderness, California State Wilderness bans bicycle use, so IMBA was alarmed when they heard of AB 2923 which required State Parks to inventory some specific lands as potential Wilderness. Most alarming was that this included places we ride and cherish in Henry Coe State Park and other areas with significant potential for mountain bike trails such as Austin Creek State Recreation Area, and Robert Lewis Stevenson State Park. All of these lands  already had high levels of protection.

Tom Ward of IMBA California met with Wilderness advocates and the legislative sponsor but they were unwilling to modify the legislation. Then IMBA took the case to the governor asking him to veto the bill. Thanks to the many mountain bikers who wrote, including CORBA members, the governor did veto the bill as unnecessary, costly and bad public policy.

Mountain bikers support the protection of our wild lands, but often, as in this case, Wilderness is the wrong tool. This is a battle which continues to plague us since bikes were banned from Federal Wilderness in 1984 in the early days of mountain biking.
