Urgent News

Cyclists seriously injured on unexpected trail jumps

Two weeks ago, a mountain biker encountered a jump that had been built on a downhill section of a trail. This is the second incident in the past six months that we have heard of serious injuries (multiple broken bones, reconstructive surgery, extended hospital stays, months of disability) resulting from riders unexpectedly hitting new jumps on trails that were familiar to them. We must always be on the alert for obstacles on the trails because large rocks and tree limbs can fall on the trail at any time and large ruts can develop during the rainy season. Jumps are particularly hard to see because they match the color of the trail and they usually don't have sharp edges that could cast a clear shadow. So, for your own and everyone's safety,

  • Never build an unauthorized jump on a public trail!
  • Always be alert for unexpected obstacles when riding
  • If you find a hazard on the trail, make a note of the location then contact the MBU and tell them about it. The MBU knows how to contact the local park managers

Members of the Mountain Bike Unit
in Malibu Creek State Park

Mountain Bike Unit is recruiting volunteers for 2009. Informational meeting to be held Saturday February 7th.

The Mountain Bike Unit (MBU), sponsored by the National and State park services and the Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority, is looking for mountain bikers who might be interestein in joining the unit. The MBU assists in providing park visitors with a quality outdoor experience and preserving natural resources while patrolling over 60 thousand acres of public parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Beginning February 2009, training will include visitor contact skills, radio use, park rules and regulations, first aid and CPR, and field training exercises. If you would like to learn more, an informational meeting will be held at King Gillette Ranch at 9:00 am on Saturday, February 7th. Bring your bike and helmet for an optional, fun ride after the presentation. Details.

Upcoming and Past Trailwork

Why do Trailwork? If you've ever wondered this, take a look at this article in the Summer 2008 issue of Terra Times to learn more about why it's important. Visit the CORBA Trail Crew page for more information and links to photos of past events.

April 4 - Rogers Road Backbone Trail. This ia a joint trailwork project with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and REI. Details.

April 24-26 - Santa Monica Mountains Trails Days. This is a weekend event with CORBA, SMMTC and other trail user groups with camping at Danielson Ranch in Point Mugu State Park. You can come in Friday night and stay until Sunday or leave Saturday after trail maintenance. Some people just come in for Saturday. There will be a barbecue and raffle on Saturday evening. Free Mountain Biking Skills Clinic

Saturday March 7 is the next skills clinic.

The CORBA free skills clinic is held on the first Saturday of every month at Malibu Creek State Park.

Mountain biking is a lot like tennis or skiing. Just a few minor adjustments in technique can make a huge difference in your control and proficiency. If you want to get better faster, you need to know the fundamentals of mountain biking technique. Whether you're just  getting into mountain biking or have been riding for years, you'll learn some valuable tips from our Introduction to Mountain Biking  skills class that is offered each month. Check out our Skills Clinic web page for all the information. After the clinic, see photos of your new skills on the CORBA web site that you can share with your family and friends!
